Four Buttes was a station on the Great Northern Railroad. The town took its name from the stately buttes to the northwest. At one time, they were called the Whiskey Buttes. Apparently, whiskey trading with the native people was a popular activity near these landmarks. Ask about them at Pioneer Town in Scobey. The post office was established in 1927 with Hans Kjos as postmaster.
Four Buttes is located in northeastern Montana, 10 miles west of Scobey on Highway 248.
