The Environmental Education Center is located at the Summit House on top of Big Mountain. The center offers an educational experience, featuring a learning tree named Sally Snag. Some other features of the center are a wildflower display with guided walks daily, 20 different types of animal skins including a grizzly bear, mountain lion, weasel and mountain goat. The summer season runs May 24 through September 28.
Hikers may use the Danny on Memorial Trail with routes ranging from 3 to 6 miles, but snow will be encountered near the summit elevations. The trail is named after Danny On, an ecologist with the United States Forest Service. Further information about his life is available in the Environmental Education Center. Hikers may walk the entire 5.6-mile Danny On trail or choose from any of three shorter hikes from the summit.
The Glacier Chaser is chair-lift/gondola ride that carries visitors to the top of Big Mountain's 7000-foot summit in Whitefish beginning June 2nd at 10:00am. You may choose to ride the enclosed gondola or an open air chair, each provide a spectacular view of of Glacier National Park, Waterton International Peace Park, Flathead Lake and the Flathead Valley.
Directions: Take Highway 93 North from I-90 in Missoula. When you reach Whitefish, follow the signs to Big Mountain, 8 miles outside of town.
