The Custer County Art Center was established in 1977 and is located in a park overlooking the Yellowstone River. Housed in the holding tanks of the old Miles City water treatment plant, built in 1910 and 1924, the art center fills nearly 7,000 square feet of exhibit and work space. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and earned a Montana Governor's Historic Preservation Award.The Art Center has two large, elegant galleries, featuring national exhibitions and works from its permanent collection. Seven exhibits change annually including regional and national collections of contemporary, traditional, and historical artworks. Permanent collection items include historical photographs from Miles City's 1800s beginning by L.A. Huffman, Evelyn Cameron, E.S. Curtis and others. Directions: The Art Center is located 1/3 mile west of downtown Miles City's Main Street on Waterplant Road. From I-94, take Exit 135 to 2 mile marker and turn north on Waterplant Road. Converted historic waterworks building is in Pumping Plant Park, 1/3 mile from turnoff (onto Waterplant Road).
