The Billings Rimrock Opera Company brings grand opera to the rich cultural climate of the Billings area. We also offer educational opportunities for elementary through high school students in Billings as well as southern Montana and northern Wyoming with the annual fall school tour of a 'mini opera' production.
The Billings Rimrock Opera Company was established in 1997, the year the Opera marked its 400th anniversary. In 1999 the Rimrock Opera Company produced its first opera, The Barber of Seville, starring the international opera star, Pablo Elvira, along with two opera stars who grew up in the Billings area, Douglas Nagel and Curt Peterson. International and regional opera singers star in all of the Rimrock Opera Company mainstage productions, with area singers completing the cast and chorus. A full orchestra with nationally known guest conductors and local musicians brings the highest quality music to Rimrock Opera presentations. All operas take place in the Alberta Bair Theater.
In 1999, ROC hired its artistic director, Douglas Nagel, a Billings native and international opera star. The Company produced Madam Butterfly in November of 2000, with Douglas Nagel directing. The Merry Widow followed in 2001 as the mainstage production. Subsequent operas produced are Tosca and Carmen in 2002, and Rimrock Opera's 'Mozart Meets Montana' 2003 season presenting The Magic Flue and Don Giovanni. In March of 2004 Hansel and Gretel take the stage for the spring opera production. In October, Rimrock Opera Company will offer the world premiere of a new opera entitled Nosferatu, the story of Dracula.
