Saco is located in northeaster Phillips County on US Highway 2, has a population 225, plus the surrounding agricultural community which helps to support the business growth in Saco. We have visitors who stop by from all parts of the world to enjoy our friendliness and freedom. Area attractions include Nelson Reservoir which is located 12 miles west of Saco. Year round fishing is available and swimming, boating, water skiing, camping, picnic area and public access boat ramp in summer months. Other attractions in the area include: C.M. Russell Memorial Park, Chet Huntley restored one room school, restored Saco jail and museum, Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge. Hunting is a major draw to this area. You will see and hear red fox, the yipping coyote, badger, beaver, the playfulness of the mink, prairie dogs, whitetail and mule deer keeping their head low, the bugle of the elk, antelope moving across the prairie, pheasant in the golden wheat stubble, and the puffed pride of the grouse. Being located on a central flyway waterfowl hunting is great. The Milk River north of Saco offers fishing for walleye, catfish, northern pike, carp and other varieties. Cole Ponds also north of Saco is a good fishing and picnic site. Commercial travel is accessible via Amtrak in Malta and Glasgow and Big Sky Airlines in Glasgow. Farming and ranching is the major industry. Many operations have been handed down for generations and acreage in excess of 10,000 is common. The industry is dependent upon the weather and whims of the market. This irrigated valley is devoted to the production of alfalfa and blue joint hay.
