Built in 1913 as a hunting lodge, Lake McDonald Lodge presents the same comfortable, homey atmosphere now as it did when originally built by John Lewis. Lewis, a furrier, collected all of the hunting trophies, which are still displayed in the lobby. It's said that the famous western artist Charles M. Russell drew the pictographs, which can be seen, on the massive stone fireplace in the Lodge.
A total of 100 rooms are available through a combination of lodge, cottage and motel room accommodations. Facilities at the complex include Russell's Fireside Dining Room, Stockade Lounge, Jammer Joe's Grill & Pizzeria, gift shop and camp store.
Oversized chairs offer inviting seats for you to take in the lakeside view from the verandah. If you have a taste for adventure, you can set out on one of the numerous scenic and interpretive tours on the historic red 'jammer' buses, take a hike or arrange for a horseback ride. Nightly Park Ranger talks, cruises on the lake and fishing are other favorite activities available at this popular hotel.
Directions: Lake McDonald Lodge & Complex is located in the west side of Glacier National Park on the Going-to-the Sun Road, approximately 11 miles from the west entrance to the park, which is located off of Highway 2 at West Glacier, Montana.
