Wilderness River Outfitters offers hiking and rafting wilderness trips on the South Fork and Middle Fork of the the Flathead Rivers. Bob Marshall Wilderness and Great Bear Wilderness. Middle Fork of the Flathead River - This 5-day river trip is accessible only by air, horse, or foot. We start with a scenic flight from Kalispell, Montana to Shaefer Meadows in the Great Bear Wilderness. We are fortunate to be one of only two outfitters that the Forest Service allows to operate floats trips on this secluded stretch of the river. This means the area has very limited use, providing you a 'quality wilderness experience'. This trip begins and ends in Kalispell, Montana. South Fork of the Flathead River - This 8-day trip offers a combination of hiking and rafting. Normally, we backpack (horse-support is available) through the 'Bob' over Holland Pass down to the South Fork along Gordon Creek. camping at secluded lakes with mountain vistas along the way. On the fourth day we meet the pack stock with river rafts and supplies, to begin our 62 mile rafting trip. The South Fork will take us through a wide glacial valley with broad, grassy meadows scattered along the way. We'll hike to Big Salmon Lake, a beautiful 4.5 miles long and .5 mile wide alpine lake. Crystal clear river and deep pools make for some excellent trout fishing. The last day is packed with excitement as we descend through Meadow Creek Gorge. This trip begins and ends in Kalispell.
