The Casey Meadows Trail (343) provides an easy hike into the Elkhorn Mountains. There is a gradual elevation gain on this three-mile walk to the meadows of about 1,300 feet. Just before you get to the meadow there is a campsite in the woods. From the meadow there are views of the nearby peaks and the low part of Casey Peak. The meadow is a nice place to eat lunch. This trail proceeds through an area of the 1988 Warm Springs Fire and provides panoramic views of the fire impacts. Hike through beautiful forest along the East Fork of McClellan Creek. Casey Meadows is popular year round for ski touring as well as hiking. Other trails intersect at Casey Meadows for hikers seeking additional opportunities. The length is 4.2 miles. Trail begins at Forest Road 294 and ends at Trail Junction 117. Area Maps to use are the Helena National Forest Visitor Map and USGS Map1: Casey Peak, Township 8N; Range 2W; Section 9. .Another way to access the trailhead is to take Highway 12 East, 2-miles east of East Helena, turn south onto McClellan Creek Road. Either route is approximately 10 miles on dirt roads. Park next to the bridge; walk across the bridge to access the trailhead.
