Inverness was named after a pioneer, Scotty Watson, in memory of his native country, Scotland. The first post office was established in 1909 with Adolph Gesche as postmaster. Many of the settlers came by train from Minnesota and North Dakota, arriving in 1910-1912. An extreme drought occurred in 1917 and by 1918 many of the homesteaders had relocated.
Inverness is located northcentral Montana, on US Highway 2 between Shelby and Havre.
