Elliston began as a trade town for gold and quartz. Later a mill for a lime quarry was built to support the town's economy. The first post office was established in 1884 with S. N. Nicholson as postmaster.Elliston is located in southwestern Montana, 25 miles west of Helena on U.S. Highway 12, near the Continental Divide.
