Ledger was named after the county commissioner, Dan Ledgerwood. The first post office was established in 1916 with N. Esper Norman as postmaster. North Dakota also had a community named Ledgerwood, which caused confusion, so later the name was changed to Ledger. In 1923, the post office under this name was established with Frank Stuart as postmaster.
Ledger is located in the north central area of Montana. It is situated off of I-15 south of Shelby.
