Melstone was named after an Associated Press reporter, Melvin Stone. He was along when the president of the railroad was touring and naming the towns along the way. The first post office was established in 1908 with Robert Wilson as postmaster.Melstone is located in central area of Montana, between Roundup and Forsyth on Highway 12.
