Highwood is known for its cattle grazing land. In the early day, because of the terrain, it was necessary for cowboys in this area to travel 30 miles by horse to Fort Benton for supplies. The supplies were shipped by riverboat up the Missouri river for dispersion. The first post office was established in 1881 with Isaac McCord as postmaster. It was open and closed three times before 1886. It was reopened in 1886 and remains so to date.
Highwood is located in central Montana, 25 miles east of Great Falls.
